Matricaria Chamomilla Extract

Chamomile Extract

Chamomile is a soothing flower, treasured for centuries by sensitive, reactive skin.

  • Used to soothe: bisabolol is the compound behind chamomile's reputation on irritated skin.
  • Contains antioxidant flavonoids: apigenin and quercetin among them.
  • Well tolerated by most skin types: bisabolol and chamazulene are classified as non-sensitisers.

Why we use it

Around 120 secondary metabolites have been documented in chamomile, roughly 28 terpenoids and 36 flavonoids among them, which is a lot for a single flower extract. Its compounds have been studied for how they act on the mediators behind visible irritation, and traditional use goes back centuries on skin that stings and flushes. One thing worth knowing: chamomile belongs to the Asteraceae family, so if you react to that family this is one to skip. Otherwise it is among the best-tolerated ingredients we work with, which is why it turns up at three points in the routine: in the Removing Balm, in the Soothing Toner and in the Shielding Sunscreen, the moments when skin is most easily provoked.
