Why we use it

Long before it was a skincare ingredient, achiote was pigment. Pre-Hispanic cultures used its deep red seeds for ceremonial body art, and that same colour is the antioxidant at work: bixin and norbixin are carotenoids, the compounds that give plants their red and orange. On skin, its phenolic acids also help calm the look of redness, and its tocopherols keep the other antioxidants working for longer. You will find achiote in the Anti-Aging Mask on Step 3, where a mask gives it the time it needs to work.
